Gems of Geometry, eh? I tried the Search Inside feature here, and everything seemed pretty good, so I finally went and purchased a copy.There is an astounding amount of great material in this book, all visually enticing, and mathematically deep. Well written explanations, and lots of good facts.
Looking through this, I get the idea that a much longer book was outlined first, and then the duller sections were pared away again and again, until a cohesive, exciting mathematical narrative remained, featuring all the best material of modern mathematics.

This book is a popular math book, so the audience is large.
I look at this as one of those boxes of candy with 20 different types inside. Even though you might not like each type of candy, you still find yourself wanting more when the box is empty.
It is an apt metaphor for this book.
Barnes does an excellent job of touching on geometry across thousands of years and a variety of disciplines. He provides just enough of a background and math to educate the reader, without requiring the reader to understand it if they wish to foregoe the math.
There is something for everyone. For me the surface tension was incredible. And the harmony of spheres.
This is not a cheap book, but it is mind candy that will not rot you brain.
